Bringing Home Your Dachshund Puppy: Everything You Need to Know
Bringing home a new Dachshund puppy is one of those days you never forget. There is nothing quite like carrying that tiny little body through your front door and realizing, you’re home now.
At Kimbrie’s Dream Cream Doxies, our puppies are raised in our home and surrounded by love from the very beginning. By the time one of our babies leaves us, we have loved, held, cared for, worried over, laughed at, and prayed over that puppy for weeks. Our goal is not simply to raise beautiful long-haired miniature Dachshunds. We want to raise puppies who are prepared to become deeply loved members of their new families.
So, as exciting as go-home day is, there are a few things we want every family to know.
Having everything ready ahead of time makes those first few days much easier for both you and your puppy.
Your puppy will need a comfortable place to sleep, food and water bowls, the food he or she is accustomed to eating, a properly fitted harness and leash, safe toys, blankets, grooming supplies, and everything you’ll need for potty training.
One thing we are particularly mindful of with Dachshunds is protecting their backs. Those adorable long bodies and little legs are part of what makes the breed so special, but they also mean we need to be thoughtful about jumping and unnecessary strain on the spine.
Ramps, safe handling, maintaining a healthy weight, and good habits from puppyhood can make a difference throughout your Dachshund’s life.
Remember that your puppy’s entire world has just changed.
For the first time, your puppy is away from Mom, littermates, familiar smells, familiar sounds, and the home he or she has known since birth.
Some puppies walk into their new homes as though they own the place. Others need a little more reassurance. Both are completely normal.
Keep the first few days peaceful. Give your puppy plenty of affection and opportunities to explore without overwhelming him or her with too many new people, places, and experiences all at once.
Trust doesn’t have to be rushed. You’re building a relationship that will hopefully last for many, many years.
Your puppy is still a baby, and accidents are going to happen.
Consistency is much more effective than punishment. Take your puppy outside frequently, especially after waking, eating, drinking, playing, and napping. Praise successful potty trips and establish a predictable routine.
Dachshunds are incredibly smart. They can also have very definite opinions about things, including whether wet grass is an acceptable place for their precious little feet. 😉
Patience, consistency, and a sense of humor will serve you well.
Tiny Dachshund puppies are quick, curious, and surprisingly talented at finding things they shouldn’t.
Puppy-proof your home before go-home day. Keep medications, electrical cords, toxic foods, small objects, household chemicals, and anything that could be swallowed safely out of reach.
Be especially careful around stairs, furniture, balconies, pools, larger animals, and open doors.
Your puppy may be tiny, but curiosity comes in the extra-large size.
One of the greatest joys of raising Dachshunds is watching the bond they form with their people.
They don’t simply want to live in your house. They want to live with you.
They want to know where you’re going, what you’re doing, why the bathroom door is closed, and whether whatever you’re eating might possibly belong to them. 😂
That closeness is one of the things we love most about this breed.
Talk to your puppy. Hold them. Play with them. Teach them. Let them learn the rhythm of your home and become part of your everyday life.
Go-home day is exciting for our families, but it is emotional for us, too.
Every puppy born here matters to us. Long before you carry your puppy home, we’ve watched that tiny baby grow from the moment he or she entered this world.
That’s why finding the right home will always matter more to us than simply finding a home.
We want our families to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing updates, and reaching out when they need us. Our relationship doesn’t have to end when your puppy leaves our home.
Instead, we like to think that’s when a new chapter begins.
Our prayer is that every puppy we raise becomes exactly what a dog should be: a faithful companion, a source of laughter and comfort, and a very loved little member of the family.
